Research Programs

To further our goals, and ground them in research, we have multiple paths to gather the information we need. Each avenue depends upon participation—whether from educators, students, partners, or other community contributors.

  Fellowships and GAships

The NIAE Fellowship Program provides an opportunity for faculty members at a national level to pursue areas of research that align to the NIAE’s research interests. The program also facilitates opportunities for graduate students to build a research portfolio, receive mentoring, and develop their expertise.

The program supports Community Fellows who work in tandem with NIAE scholars to focus research on educational services, and community contributions to educational success.

All fellowships include a time buy-out, stipend, or independent contractor agreement depending on the research project or activity.

  NIAE Mini-Grant Program

The NIAE Mini-Grant Program generates research and builds NIAE’s research body of work. It also helps to grow a national network of researchers, practitioners, and community.

Grants up to $25,000 are offered in three main categories: a) research, b) practice, and c) community. The first competitive award, which will focus on research, will be announced in the fall of 2023.

  Conferences/Convenings

The NIAE will host multi-discipline conferences and convenings on a variety of topics aligned with the NIAE research interests to generate innovative ideas that transform education, build NIAE’s body of work, and grow a national network of researchers, practitioners, and community.

Proceedings and/or reports will be published to summarize the body of work. Additionally, knowledge stemming from the work will be disseminated across diverse communication channels to reach multiple audiences. Events will be scheduled considering the emergence of educational issues, and/or the needs of the Institute.

The first NIAE convening, which will focus on teacher preparation and retention, will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada in late 2024.

  Research Support Programs

NIAE’s programs support innovative research practices, maximize resources needed for successful research project implementation, and minimize transaction costs. They also create a structure to build NIAE’s body of work, grow a foundational network of UNLV faculty, support faculty in their pursuit of knowledge, and build fiscal stability.

In collaboration with NIAE, faculty partners access NIAE’s network of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional faculty and community partners to collaborate on and/or pursue grants. Partners can receive NIAE’s technical and logistical support for grant and project management, human resources support (such as management of GAships), and professional development.

Additionally, NIAE can help develop project partnership agreements, conduct partner network analysis, and assist in implementing community engagement models. Faculty can include NIAE in upcoming projects or grants (F&A), or seek support from the NIAE by aligning research that feeds into NIAE’s research platform.

  Contests

NIAE coordinates calls and contests to generate innovative ideas to transform education and engage broader audiences in conversations about education.

The program supports the creation of media content with innovative practical and empirical knowledge from community partners/teachers/parents/students about innovative and impactful activities, practices, and/or experiences.

  Innovation Open Hub

The NIAE Innovation Open Hub captures suggestions, ideas, and feedback on educational topics. The Open Hub posts questions and videos to generate conversations and discussion. Ideas from the NIAE Innovation Open Hub may be considered to develop programming or research opportunities supported by NIAE.
